what are you grateful for?

“If you are thankful for what you have now, you will always have more.” – Oprah

“If you want to change your state of being, start with gratitude.” – Tony Robbins

“Wherever there is appreciation, there is duplication.” – Bishop TD Jakes

As you can tell from the quotes above, I’ve been watching a lot of Oprah’s Lifeclass lately. It’s had the same effect on me as the show Revenge has on me, I just can’t pull away. Now mind you, I am a serious Oprah fan- her message, what she stands for and what she does on her platform. Not everyone is with me on that one, and that’s fine. She is and will always be one of my greatest teachers.

I watched the Lifeclass Tour Finale last night, and it was all about gratitude. Being grateful for being a part of this world, grateful for the experiences life offers and being grateful for the people in your life. The show brought all the teachers together on one stage- Tony Robbins (God I love him, why do the seminars have to be so expensive????), Deepak Chopra, Iyanla Vanzant and Bishop TD Jakes. All with one topic in mind, gratitude.

Gratitude is a powerful thing that I unfortunately rarely take the time to really think about. Being grateful and thankful for what I have in life right now I’m learning is personal, humbling and should be a daily ritual. I always thought being grateful had to do with the big stuff- having parents that love me, sharing my life with my husband and being able to afford a house, groceries and other necessities.

However, I’m learning that it’s the little things in every day that makes a difference, and being grateful for those little things really have an impact on your life. I’ve been told a lot about the idea of a gratitude journal- Oprah has one, my coach suggested I start one and my friend and I were talking about one. The idea is simple- everyday you write one thing or things that you are grateful for. It can be anything from being alive, someone opening the door for you, a fresh pot of coffee, or a big accomplishment.

Now, you can read this post and think to yourself that this is all hogwash. On the flip side, you can also read this post and think about what role gratitude plays in your life. It doesn’t cost anything to be grateful, and the payout is so much better.

I am going to start a gratitude journal that I write in everyday. It’s something that I’m giving a try to get a fresh perspective on life, what I have and ultimately, what to be grateful for in the future. So I’ll start here:

Today I am grateful for:

– Having the OWN Network

– Affordable fresh daisies on sale at Kroger for my kitchen

– Mya as my companion during the day

– Internet access for research, resources and communication

– My gratitude journal

What are you grateful for?
